The dog is Ch Yaap, born in 1898 and a fine example of the type of Schipperke that was developing in England at that time. Yaap was eighth male Champion in the breed in Britain and the two puppies in the picture may be two of his children, or merely added to give dimension to the composition. Mrs Skewes Coxs son presented the painting to the Kennel Club in 1948
