Laying Down the Law
Landseer helped popularise anthropomorphism in art and this is a copy of one of his best-known examples. Sometimes called Trial by Jury, the Poodle was owned by Count D Orsay and has been identified as playing the role of Lord Brougham. Landseers painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840 and aquired by the 6th Duke of Devonshire, who had his own Blenheim Spaniel, Bony, inserted behind the Greyhound, as can be seen in this later copy
