The Card Game

Signed and dated 1885
Oil on canvas 27.5 x 36 ins
This painting typifies anthropomorphism depicted in art during the 19th century, when dogs were portrayed in the guise of humans. One's social standing was never far from the surface, even in art, and the cat, whose status at this period would be less than that of the dog, looks on questioningly at the Poodle who has just won a hand. The Pug also has some doubts, but the other dogs accept the inevitable
